When we were young full logo 1.png

When We Were Young is a music festival that took place in Winchester, Nevada, at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds on October 22nd, 23rd and 29th, 2022. The musical line-up consisted of big named bands from the early 2000s "Emo" scene, with the big headliners being My Chemical Romance and Paramour. My partner, Nicole Kubinski, and I took on this festival rebranding as a passion project because we are both shamelessly apart of the target audience we are adhering to. When We Were Young are for all the emo kids, tweens, and teens of the early 2000s that either never got to experience their favorite bands live, or did, and would do anything to travel back in time. Nicole and I scoured the internet for a nostalgia bank of every toy, song, gadget, or game that incited a rush of "Holy crap, I remember that!"

These posters are specifically designed and written to speak to that "I remember that!" feeling. Iconic childhood favorites such as Pokémon cards, Doodle Bear, and the Nintendo DS are our chosen hero images. Strategically, they would be posted around community spots where younger crowds hang out. Malls, bus and train stops, music stores, gyms, or book stores. They were made in Adobe Photoshop with multiple layers of digital collaging.

This brochure was designed with the intention to be handed out on-site. Reminiscent of 2000s toy catalogs featuring the emo-ified toys of the day, it was important to us to keep the aesthetic while also making sure important information was properly displayed. Nicole also included her favorite detail from when we, ourselves, were young: sharpie-ing onto the catalog to tell your parents what you want!

The When We Were Young microsite is intended to display all information about the festival, an avenue to see booking options, as well as to explore any and all FAQs excited fans may have. It is also intended to allow one's digitally purchased tickets be synced up to a ticket wallet in the When We Were Young App for easy entry at the gates.

The When We Were Young app was designed with the intention of using it on-site. The home screen simply displays the event logo, which incorporates the spray-paint and collage motifs that make the category exciting.

The home page features an interactive game, shuffle the Rubix Cube for a chance to win prizes, such as 30% off at the merch stand. It also lists which band is currently playing at which stage.

The ticket wallet allows users to quickly find their event passes, including shuttle passes and 21+ identification as per site regulations.

The map feature allows attendees to link their accounts with their party to not only navigate the festival, but find each other as well.

Nicole named the stages based on common 'emo' phrases at the time, and colored coded them for recognizability. The schedule feature gives times and locations for each performance.

Based on Nintendo's Pictochat on their DS devices, the chat feature allows attendees to ask any questions or bring any concerns directly to venue employees from wherever they are, ranging from safety concerns to needing advice.
